Transformer Rewind Services

Our service capabilities are especially valuable for utilities. The aging fleet of medium-power transformers and the depleted technical staffs at many public cooperatives and municipal U.S. utilities present a serious infrastructure problem. At MTC, we provide the proactive solution.

Our rewind capabilities include:

  • Complete, detailed, and timely incoming inspection reports and recommendations.
  • Complete handling capabilities for up to 100 MVA 230 KV medium-power units, including 100T lifting capacity and direct rail access.
  • Vacuum filling, oil processing, and reprocessing equipment.
  • Experienced, utility-recognized engineering staff for redesign consultation.
  • Shell, core form, circular, and large rectangular experience and knowledge.
  • Detailed and value-added redesign features, including core insulation, oil reprocessing, and coil redesign/rerating.
  • Test facility with up to 100 MVA, 850 KV BIL test capability. Class 2 impulse test equipment planned for installation in early 2009.

Overview

in all facets of transformer rewind technology, including some with 35-40 years in the business. In some cases, MTC Transformers’ engineers have even been the original designer of 32-year-old transformers that we are asked to rewind.

Craftsmanship: Our quality craftsmanship is evident in the team of veterans who know the product and who take pride in the workmanship that is a tradition at MTC.

Technology:
Tradition doesn’t mean that our engineers are embedded in the past. We use the latest technology, such as computeraided design capabilities and the newest insulation materials.

Customer Service: At MTC, our commitment to customer service is demonstrated through our ability to offer quick and accurate responses. We answer the phone in person; we provide fast turnaround to requests for information or pricing; and we offer the most competitive lead times available. These are, and will continue to be, our trademarks.

The economic and environmental advantages of rewinding a transformer instead of replacing it are clear. A transformer’s core steel is almost always reusable. The high cost of new core steel makes the existing core a valuable resource and makes transformer rewinds an attractive choice. Since there is no tank, enclosure, or core to dispose of, and since the replaced winding materials are recycled, rewinds are also environmentally friendly.

Rewind Capabilities

MTC’s rewind service capabilities include three distinct groups:

  • Dry- type rewinds for all sizes are available. The range includes 600V class specialty machine tool transformers up to 10 MVA, 35 KV class power transformers.
  • Liquid-filled rewinds are offered for small- and medium-power transformers up to 100 MVA, 230 KV.
  • Our on-site dry-type rewind program is designed for projects with limited or difficult access to the transformer.
